Johnston County Commissioner Butch Lawter files for re-election in 2022

Johnston County Commissioner Butch Lawter, who currently serves as the board’s chairman, officially filed as a candidate for re-election on Tuesday, March 1, 2022. Lawter, a Republican, was first elected to the Johnston County Board of Commissioners in 2018 and was elected Chairman of the Board in December 2021.

“The fact that so many people want to move here demonstrates that Johnston County is an amazing place to live, and my goal is to keep it that way,” said Lawter. “We’ve made tremendous progress on the critical issues that I outlined during my campaign four years ago. We’re currently developing a comprehensive land use plan to guide and manage our growth. We’re evaluating the need to regionalize our water and sewer infrastructure. We now have a public information officer on staff to help keep citizens informed. We also have a parks, greenway, and open space coordinator to enhance the quality of life for our residents by expanding recreational opportunities and preserving open space. And we’ve done all of this while keeping taxes low and running a tight ship financially. While we’ve made great progress, I’m asking for the voters’ support for another term because we still have work to do to ensure that Johnston County has the infrastructure needed to accommodate our community’s future growth.”

During his tenure as Commissioner, Lawter has represented Johnston County on the executive board of the Triangle J Council of Governments and the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization. He also served on the Johnston Community College Board of Trustees. In 2020 he graduated from the UNC School of Government’s Advanced Leadership Corps program. Prior to his election as a commissioner, Lawter served on the Clayton Town Council from 1999-2003 and again from 2008-2019. He has been actively involved with a variety of community organizations, including the Clayton Recreational Foundation, the Town of Clayton Downtown Development Association, the Cleveland Strawberry Festival and Christmas Parade and the Cleveland Parks and Recreation District Committee. He has volunteered at multiple schools in Johnston County and served as PTA President at Cooper Elementary (Cooper Academy). Lawter earned a B.A. in Civil Engineering from Clemson University and an M.S. in Civil Engineering from North Carolina State University. He currently works as Senior Delivery Officer for WithersRavenel, Inc.  where he leads the environmental, funding and asset management, transportation, and utility practice areas. Lawter lives in Clayton with his wife, Kimberly.  Most of their family, including six grandsons, live and work in Johnston County. The Lawters have been active members of Greater Heights United Methodist Church for almost 15 years.
